Mr.T from guitarrisingtab.com commented on one of our previous posts with his wish for Guitar Rising to have a feature where users can import tabs. Maybe for songs composed by ourselves, or the ability to create tabs from an mp3 file and tab file hybrid… a .gr file if you like
Guitar Rising is planned for just Mac and PC at the moment so it should be really easy to create a file that can be easily imported into the game, which consists of the mp3, the tabs and where abouts in the song the tabs should be played. For which, there could be Guitar Rising ‘Tab Maker’ software.
If this did happen, I’m sure the game would explode in terms of popularity - there will be communities making and sharing tabs, bands releasing there own tabs, online shops selling tabs - it just may become the standard ‘tool’ for learning guitar. I don’t know what would be involved with song piracy issues though, that would be the drawback.

Looking forward to camping outside the iStore for my copy of Guitar Rising
Any idea on when a public beta might be released? (if there’s one planned)
Keep up the AMAZING work guys!

This would be the penultimate concept!! If the designers really make it possible to import any mp3/guitar tab for a song, it will change the way people learn how to play guitar forever!!
Obviously, this is all just wishful thinking right now, and even if it doesn’t happen I will still have my copy of GR reserved on day 1, but if it DOES happen then we will see a guitar revolution that hasn’t been seen since the release of METAL HEALTH!!
Rock ON!!

great idea, but i kinda doubt the music publishing folks would go for that.
maybe if they got a fee for songs on the system.
them must get $$$$ from guitar hero - anybody know the details of that arrangement?

ok the mp3 import idea is a bit unrealistic at this point. most tabulature software cannot even correctly import midi –>tab properly without getting the fingering all arsed up. I don’t see mp3/m4a –>tab being any easier especially since one would have to cancel out all other sounds other than the guitar riff you wanted to play. so how do you cancel out the drums, vocals, bass, and noise.
now back to reality. I would LOVE to see GR become compatable with common tab file types such as .ptb from PowerTab and .gp3 4 and 5 from GuitarPro. That would be enough for me since you can find free tab files anywhere.
I’d also love to see some compatability with text tabs as well.
some other things to consider
will GR be only for guitar?
I would love to see the potential for this learning software to be fully realized.
What about other picked stringed instruments?
Bass
Banjo
Mandolin?
I’d go on but you get the idea. And remember. . .
keep up the fight! they cant kill us all.

Thanks for the mention douggie,
From a video i’ve seen from GDC ‘08, its looks like they don’t really cancel anything out from the songs as far as bass, drums etc goes.
This person was playing along to “enter sandman” and it looked like he was just playing a riff over the top of everything else. Thats not to say the riff didn’t fit in nicely because it did. So i can see it would be perfectly possible to import your mp3/m4a along with your tab. and just play your own riff over the top of the actual song. obviously timing might be an issue here, but thats something that would need to be perfected and if your tabs rubbish…well thats you own fault isn’t it!!
I think the point is, its a lot easier to learn songs that you know and its a lot more gratifying to learn songs that you love. So why not make a jukebox type function where you can add your own music….come on “gametank”…you know it would make sense!

Ok. I see the point there. It would be much cooler playing as jimi hendrix, slash or newgent if you could hear the rest of the band. I simply think that the timing would be the critical issue in this instance but that should not dissuade anyone from trying. My understanding was that the game software was supposed to rip the appropriate riffs from the mp3/m4a file and interpret the tab notation from the audio alone. Still a great idea but not practical. However if the authors have already setup the game songs to play like gh3 that would be great. (Except the bad twang sounds when you get the notes wrong. Everyone will be making those noises on their own.) I would like to see the developers include some tools to get us users making our own game song files. Something on the order of a tp3 file with custom timing and tab creation editor. Embed the tab notation and timimg into or onto the mp3 format. Naturally not all songs have perfect timing so some custom tweaking will be necessary but that brings up another issue. If a song is slightly off time does that encourage the learning of bad habits while playing or is that integral to playing in a band where no person is perfect?
